My mother was a leftie and teachers punished her for that. As a result, her handwriting was terrible. I, too, am a leftie. She took me to school and told the teachers to leave my handwriting alone-- that she had already taught me to write. I had teachers who moved my paper so that my paper was in the same position as the righties; no wonder lefties had such a hard time learning to write. I do hope that we are "over" trying to make everything uniform for students and respect students for their individuality.
