Macybaby, your technique is called webbing and it works so when when you want to keep lots of little pieces in order. I learned it at one of my quilt guild meetings a while back and then saw another gal using it on a Bonnie Hunter quilt with all of those little bitty pieces.
I often use it when chain piecing lots of pieces that are duplicates of each other. A good time saver. Looking forward to the progress you make on your candy quilt.
