I use the very cheapest muslin I can find for string piecing. I do pre-wash to get the shrinkage out and cut into the size base square I want. I absolutely hate tearing out paper so will not do that for string piecing.
Glad to hear about the JoAnns premium muslin and will try it as a backing someday.
