I am looking for the term for how much lumber is "lost" in the cut -
but in the meantime, I saw the pictures for how quartersawn lumber is cut and how similar it looks to the log cabin block pattern.

In my mind, when rotary cutting, there is some fabric "loss" at each cut, just as there is "loss" at each cut when lumber is sawed.
