When I was a senior in high school (1977-78) I made my first quilt and it was for me to take to college. I really don't think it matters much the actual size, I think you want to make sure it isn't too wide more than be concerned with the length. In my dorm, our beds were modular and 3 sides were wall/partitions, other buildings had other layouts with "normal" beds but you didn't know your room assignment until the last minute. It was really hard to tuck in the one side and I had other things to do than keep my bed neat
