I would say cooking is a necessity. How silly to think it's a luxury. Maybe gourmet cooking, but not "garden variety" cooking to feed oneself and family.
Sewing? No longer a necessity, and like Tartan said, affording fabric is getting to be a luxury. But everyone should at least know how to sew a button back on when it falls off! If not, taking it to a tailor is a luxury!
