What a beauty that is! Yes I think the pattern is written that way so you aren't working with bias edges. I agree with Rhonda that it would probably be wise to do a stay stitch around the edges. I would also use washable school glue to attach the border strip before sewing just to help keep things lined up properly and to ensure you don't miss in one of those inside "v"s.
