There are different versions or legends about charm quilts. Some just say you should have 1000 pieces of fabric. Others say the 1000 pieces should be all different.


My friend in Quebec who will be 100 in October told me that her grandmother called this type of quilt a "courting quilt". Young girls would start their courting quilt at a young age collecting fabric from different sources as they went. They didn't put near 1000 pieces in their quilts but enough to make it challenging for their suitors.

Another legend has it that mothers would make charm quilts to keep their sick children amused while bed-bound. "Find the two pieces that are alike."
