It holds a lot of pins, but they stick to the outside and underneath as easily as they stick to the inside so that can be a problem. Also, when grabbing pins, it's fairly common to be stabbed....
I love mine. I picked it up at the Marshfield Quilt Show from Brubaker's booth. Not very many pins stick to the bottom. They usually get caught in the top and are almost always caught with the point to the center and the ball head to the outside so you can easily grab them. I haven't tried it with the plain metal pins; I've pretty much given up using then at all.
