I know this is an older question, but was my first question when I saw it. I ended up googling it and found the "prototype" thread initially posted at
Disappearing Disappearing 9-Patch Prototype
which tells how to cut the 9 patch on both diagonals and then sew however you like it, then cut the resulting block on the horizontal and vertical centers to make the final block. (Patrice explains it better on the 'prototype' thread.)
