I have participated in a few quilt alongs. Due to my work schedule I’ve at times not been able to keep up with the schedule but I just work on them as I can. I’ve also done a couple of the mystery sew alongs saving the clues and working on them as I was able. I’ve found sometimes seeing the other participants progress helps me stay motivated to continue working on it.
I do quilt along/sew along and much like Ckcowl, I may not be able to just "keep up" for all kinds of reasons, so I keep the directions and finish as can. I like the supportive nature of the quilt along and most folks do finish within a couple weeks of each other. And even if it is a couple of months, the group usually sticks together for a while as tops are finished, quilted and photos posted of variations on the pattern. Mystery vs. Quilt along?
