The way I understand it is .....
Instead of cutting individual keys and sewing them into borders, you would take longer strips and sew them end to end, then sew the long side together, continue just as if you are making a jelly roll race quilt (really quick and easy). then, once the appropriate size, you would just sub cut strips to your desired height.
It would give a scrappy look and be much faster.
