It might be handy for thread basting a quilt. When I thread baste, I have to put one hand under the quilt to bring the needle back to the top. It looks like with the bends you could do it all from the top maybe?
Have you thought of getting a curved upholstery needle to use for your thread basting? When I sandwich my quilt I use big binder clips all around the table edge so getting my hand under the fabric is impossible. When I baste (usually with pins but sometimes thread) there seems to be enough 'give' in the sandwich to be able to get the pin/needle up to the top again without having to put my hand under. But a curved needle might do the trick for you??
