I have this die and made a red and white log cabin. I don't remember having lots of left over strips. I cut four layers at a time using two reds and two white fabrics. So one cut made eight blocks. The hardest thing for me was keeping the strips organized after cutting. I used a small design board to lay out one block at a time then sewed the block.
