I always struggle with a mitered binding. Heck mitering always gets me! The bulk in the corners. Stripes especially. In many cases I go straight across and end at each corner and do no mitering. Then I do not have to worry about matching stripes in a miter. I can easily match a strip with a square corner. and since I hand stitch the back side of my bindings I can easily hand the little bulk in the corners. No 45 degree turns. I can come up with a nicer finish that I would with the struggle of the miter that never looks great.
