I too would go to the 90/14 top stitch needle before trying new thread. If you have some scrap to play with check it out first and see how your thread holds up. On a bag I would go with a thread that is 100% polyester as it will most likely hold up a bit better than a blend on a bag. Do needle first and thread second. Walking foot is great! Hav fun making your bag.
