It looks like the spring is not in the correct shape and they are somewhat fragile. I think that if you are careful, you should be able to bend it to the proper position. The tension should probably be set at 4, as is shown in the picture with the foot controller on the bed of the machine. The threading is closer to being correct as seen in the picture of the full machine with the foot controller on the bed of the machine.

The nice thing about having a manual in pdf format is that you can enlarge the page and see it in more detail. I'm not sure, but frequently after going through the tension discs and under the spring, the thread needs to pull the spring so that the thread actually goes around the metal hook shaped piece. The instructions say pull the thread firmly over to the right. In order to do that you probably need to hold the spool so that you aren't pulling thread off the spool as you thread the tension.

As the instructions indicate, raise the presser foot to begin threading. I usually lower the presser foot to thread the needle.
