Hi again Stummel - I'm in south-west England, so no direct help either... but I just contacted someone in a local group here (which I also found on quiltersdomain), and she was super friendly and invited me to come to a meeting or two before I decide to join. Nothing else has happened yet but I thought I'd let you know. This isn't Germany, no immediate threat of forms to be filled out and all that... :-D
