Many times I write in the selvage with a permanent marker and then fold so that selvage edge is on the up side. I hold scrap paper under the selvage as I write - so far ink doesn't run through.
I also use brass safety pins to attach paper notes but like the idea given here of stapling, though I do wonder if they would rust against folded fabric and cause a problem.
