I like charcoal-on-black prints. It really makes the colors pop, far more than white. I don't like solids and since what I prefer to make is lap quilts for donation, white gets dirty too easily. If I do use white it's a WoW.
I used red a couple of years ago for a mystery quilt, with black, gray, and white. Really came out nice.
