A friend gave me a little scrap of fabric that had a bunch of little robins all over in random fashion. I just cut out the birds, sewed them on intact, and then stitched beaks using embroidery floss.

You know that when you applique you can never look at fabrics the same way. I bought a fabric one time because it looked like feathers for a pheasant. It was just brownish fabric with scallops. But I saw feathers. It turned out quite nicely and it got given away long ago. When I made an applique quilt of a loon, I didn't have anything that looked like loon plumage. But, I found things that made it work. I'll have to find a picture of that one. I still have it.

Thanks, Sewing Senior and Pied Piper for the kind words. It's not done yet. It's still going to take quite a bit of work to get it totally finished.
