I had the same problem! I removed the needle plate and took out the bobbin cover and discovered a little nick in it- that's what mine was snagging on. I simply smoothed it out with a nail file and put everything back in place, and it worked after that!
I was going to mention this too. That will definitely cause the problem that you're having.
Also, I agree with Paula. Those older Singers can't be beat. A 301, or anything in the 400 series can be found for cheap, if you look around. They're solid and dependable, not to mention portable. Be careful, do not get one that is newer, because Singer changed a lot in the 60s and those machines are not so great. If you start shopping for one, check in with the Antiques Sewing Machines thread on the QB first. They will give you lots of good, sound advice and may know where you can pick one up.
