Thank you so much for your explanation, as well as the tips you have provided.
I followed your advice and took my Necchi to a tech in a Bernina store near my house in Phoenix this afternoon, met with one of the owners while I waited who seemed very nice and trustworthy, so I'm assuming nothing bad will happen to my machine. In a couple weeks I should have her back and begin learning about the wonderful world of sewing. I do in the near future want to be able to take pride in servicing my machine myself, but I feel that we need to get on a first-name basis before that happens.
