Mine is the exact same way, if it's in backwards, it won't pick up the thread when I try to bring it up through the plate.

I would double check and see how the bobbin was wound, I know that sounds crazy but after watching a video on YouTube that explains just how important a correctly wound bobbin is, I swear by it.
