It might not be the tension - it might be the speed of your hands vs the speed of the machine. Since you are experimenting and learning (go you!) Try slowing the machine and your hands to get a better stitch quality.
Its been so hot here in NY that I got nothing done yesterday - spent it all in the pool. I'm hoping to do a bit more quilting of the Mets quilt and then cut some fabric for the boomerang. I've also been organizing the stash so I think that is also a good use of time.
