I use freezer paper for hand applique. Trace the shape and iron to the back of fabric. Cut 1/4" seam allowance out from the edge of the paper. Baste the seam allowance over the shape. When you have all your pieces basted, you can lay out your design, pin, and applique. Take the paper out as you go by stitching almost to the end of the piece, taking the basting stitches out, and wiggling the paper out before closing it all up. I find this technique results in nice crisp corners. You can use the freezer paper shapes several times before it loses its stickiness. Some people put the paper on top of the piece to be appliqued, but I find it slips if you handle it too much.
