I was reading an older thread the other day about a very similar machine that is electric. Some links are no longer available on the thread, but I think your friend's machine would have been made sometime between 1933 and 1942. The link for the manual at ismacs.net is for an electric machine, but should help for threading this machine. I believe that this machine takes a different needle, but there is a decal on the bed to match up to the needle.
