It's my understanding that sewing machine screws are not threaded to the modern standards. So generally speaking, you can't replace a sewing machine screw with a screw from the hardware store. (I could be mistaken.)

My local sewing machine repair shop has a cabinet full of screws, too. I think the charged me $3.00 for one I needed. It was well worth the price. They found the screw for me, though.
