I don't know about taping the needles together. That's new to me and a good idea in my opinion. I'd be concerned too about the residue. A friend of mine told me of using a vase and putting some decorative crystals/stones and storing the needles (points down). It would look like a floral arrangement of sorts if you have various colors/sizes. I made a little pouch for mine. I also made a pouch for my various crochet hooks. Maybe wrapping some batting around the middle of the needles then taping it.
Will be curious to see any other ideas you receive.
