Are you using a walking foot? I quilted for years without one before discovering its existence on this board! The videos I viewed suggested to stitch slowly in difficult areas because that needle has a lot of work to do. Furthermore, I was using old thread from MIL's estate and discovered it broke a lot, so I quit using it.
