Belfry, I agree that the second orange fabric will serve better. I also agree with Iceblossom, that if your gray should come into contact with your gold, there could be a contrast issue.

On colors being next to each other, Bonnie only mentioned the gold and orange. She made a point of saying that every color (which I took to include the gray) should contrast well with the neutral, but she didn't mention that every color should contrast well with the gray (on the other hand, with all that gray in the quilt, who knows? Maybe everything will be in contact with it).
