My go to quilt block is the depression block that you can find right here:
https://www.quilterscache.com/D/DepressionBlock.html . I know it is all HST's but it is so scrappy that you can use 4" or 4"1/2" squares that when squared up will be 3 /12" HST'S. Great block for working on building skills.
