My neighbor took pictures while I made one of the quilt blocks. A couple of comments:
I used a double strand of thread--you do quite a bit of pulling on the thread and you don't want it to brerak.
Color scheme is up to you. A light/dark scheme works well. My neighbor (the artist) thought one in a dark rose batik or a light background would look really good and use the same color for all the petals. Be fun to see what people come up with!

Gather petals snugly, then anchor thread so flower is secure.

Circle of fabric for the center yo-yo. I used a circle template for this step.

Turn raw edge down and use a running stitch around the outside.

Pull thread tight and anchor. Yo-yo is done.

It will set on top of the flower petals to cover the center hole in the petal unit.

Select fabric --cut into 5 inch squares

6 petals make a flower.

Now to assemble flower on the block. The underlying leaf pattern was ironed on then edges zig-zagged. Lay petal unit in the center then use stab stitches up and down around the edge to anchor it to the base.

Use blind stitch and stitch the yo-yo to the petal unit.
