Those owls are so cute!!!!! I have never tried applique, but if you would be so kind as to send me a copy of your wonderful owls, I think I just might have to now!!!! If you PM me I can give you all my info.
As for quilting, I would try the tree bark idea someone gave, I think that would look great behind the owls!!
