Thanks for the suggestions! I have put an old diaper over my wool mat, have changed the cover on the ironing board and got out a new iron tonight. Tomorrow I'll iron some freezer paper to the cover I removed tonight to see if that was the problem, and I'll try the washcloth for cleaning the other iron.
