When I first learned about this block, one of the places I visited mentioned that each of the block positions represented a definite place in the block. The center block becomes a corner stone. The blocks in the 12,3,6, and 9 (the ones that get cut in half) are the frames, while the pieces that are in the upper left, right/lower left, right -- those are not cut at all and are a focus piece.
The one link that was posted showed a pieced heart in those focus places ... it was interesting to me that the heart ended up being upright ... so cool! <wave>
