If the thread is laying on the fabric you can connect the top and bottom thread by hand. I have done it when my FMQ stitches are longer then I like. Tedious but doable. I thread a hand needle and mimic the stitch by going through the sandwich beside the top and bobbin thread, I knot and slip the needle through the sandwich and do another connecting stitch the correct distance from the first and so on.
