grid pattern is actually just a way to look at how a block is constructed.
Most quilt blocks are based on a single block ... a four patch ... a nine patch ...
so, when you are looking at a more complicated block, such as say: carpenter's wheel (a block that has 64 pieces in it) ... if you can break the whole block into a grid of four by four, then the block begins to look more manageable ... it is a way to observe how a block or quilt is made. <wave>
