I do FMQ often, usually on baby quilts. I don't know how I learned this but it is what I use: Mitten, thumb, mitten thumb.
You can sew a big mitten and small thumb, whatever works for you. I find myself repeating to myself "mitten, thumb" while I'm doing this!
