I have been able to take the knob off and I've used singer oil so far but I have triflo. It just looks like crusted on dirt over the years but I've read, DO NOT USE WATER! I'll give the pics a try, thank you!

The "do not use water" is mainly for the machine head that is painted and decals. The plated (chrome or nickel) metal pieces if
able to remove from the machine head can be cleaned with water or polished with metal polish, but you don't want to do that with it attached. AND you want to be sure the pieces are completely dry before reinstalling. Sometimes the plating can be compromised and flaking so won't polished back to uniform color.
