Yes there is batting behind the color fabric it is cut just the same size as the color fabric and the petals are just a single layer just turn them over ant applique them down around the rounded edge. It is kind of like turning the pie dough over to keep the juice in. The petal piece is all one piece, just like the pattern picture. You can adjust the size by using a protractor In the center of your hexagon. I hope this helps.
