PurplePansies ... Welcome to the QB. It can be a bit confusing.
As Tartan already mentioned, when someone posts to any thread,
current or years old, it bumps it to the top of the "New Posts" list.

When you look at a thread, each of the posts are dated.
With those dates you can make your decision as to the relevance and timeliness of the comments to yourself.

Each person chooses if they want to comment on a post/thread. There are no time limits or expiration dates on the QB. Thus, why you are sometimes seeing old threads.

However, by starting here ...
Quiltingboard Forums
... you can look at just the new threads, rather than all new "posts" to any "threads" regardless of when they are started.

Once you post to a thread, you can get updates automatically sent to you, so that you see all new posts to that thread. Check your settings for this.
