Have you tried pressing your seams open? I think with smaller blocks that really helps a lot, just remember to shorten your stitch length. As to smaller seam allowances, I have made some smaller when and where needed in order to keep points. I have also sliver trimmed where lots of points are coming together such as a Kaleidoscope block etc. . Just keep in mind that if the quilt is a wall hanging it may not matter as much as one that is going to be used a lot as a smaller seam may not hold up as well.
