Thhis is a really good, basic video. She is using denim as her base fabric. A hint if you are using a regular cotton weight both top and bottom: If you are having trouble keeping everything flat when doing this type of applique, take a piece of paper, any paper, the thinner the better, typing paper is fine, and put it under your base fabric and sew through all layers. This is called a stabilizer and will keep everything flat.

Then after finishing your applique as in the video, turn your piece over and trim really close to the stitiching being careful not to cut any of the stitches. I don't worry about the little bit of paper inside the stitches. They will go away during washing and big deal if they are the inside of your tablerunner!
