I have found that any savings in the ripping is used up in plucking all the tiny cut off threads out.

I do have an electric seam ripper - that works just like a mini beard trimmer. Don't know if what you are referring to is like that, but it didn't work near like I was hoping and I haven't used it in a couple of years now. So far I've never had a significant amount of embroidery stitching I needed to remove. My machine has so many sensors it has always stopped before I've got a big mess.
