That is the way I do it too. If a big quilt I scrunch and bunch it. The quilt has to not stall when sewing or the stitches will get too tight. I have to stop and rebuch the quilt to flow freely under the needle. I mark the quilting lines with a long straight edge ruler. I have a four foot one and a six foot one. Inexpensive at Lowe's or Home Depot. Mine is metal and two inches wide. I use Ultra Washable Crayola markers to mark the lines and use soap slivers to mark on the dark parts..
