Looks to me that the sashing (i-inch squares) might "touch" part of the design, but I do noth thinkthe design actually "intrudes" into the saching.
I would also do it like Dunster suggested.
You could even make the outside border 2x3 or 2x4 inch "keys" if you wanted to and wanted to make it a bit bigger.
