The Eleanor Burns QUICK Trip Around the World is a pretty efficient process...but of course it was machine pieced. Basically, you cut strips of each of the fabrics, sew all the strips together (so that you have a complete set of colors in each piece), sew first to last so that you have tubes. Then slice those sideways (so you end up with a skinny tubes of fabric with all of the colors in it). Following the layout precisely, you cut each successive tube at the next seam (so they are once again strips), and then sew these strips together. Harder to describe it than to do it!
