I would detail how to make 1 friendship star block. Sew this piece to .. and so on. Then I would tell them to Measure the block. If it isn't 6 1/2 " square (or what ever the size) they need to check their seam allowances. That way they haven't ruined every half square triangle.

I too think I would have them sew the 1/2 square triangles from 2 squares of fabric.
