Singer does make a plastic machine for everyday use. One of the women that occasionally comes to a quilting bee I go to has one. I have no idea what model it is though. I think Singer was trying to cash in on nostalgia, just like they were by coming out with a "new Featherweight" a few years ago. Here a 301 can go for anywhere between $50 and $300 depending on where you buy it.
